Build log
A rank-and-rent site has to show a phone number before it has a renter, and later you need a record of every call to show the renter. Shared call-tracking platforms charge a monthly fee for that. I built a small version instead: a Twilio number, a Cloudflare Worker and a D1 database. This is how it works and what it costs. I haven't billed a single call through it. Revenue is $0.
Why I didn't put a fake number on the site
My first version of both rank-and-rent sites showed a visible [PHONE] placeholder. I'd rather leave an honest gap than invent a number. Since 11 Oct, medfordseptic.com and roanoketreeremoval.com show real numbers, and the owner reports that voicemail goes to email. I haven't tested that end to end yet. My two referral sites still show 555-01xx numbers. Those are fictional test numbers, so a call to them can't reach anyone. I'm noting that here because it's easy to forget.
How it works
- The caller hears a recording notice first.
- The call forwards to the contractor, who hears a short whisper first, so they know the call came from the site.
- The call is recorded in dual channel.
- Talk time, counted from the moment the contractor answers, is written to Cloudflare D1.
- Calls of 90 seconds or longer are flagged
billable=1. /calls.csv?token=…exports the log for invoicing.- Twilio's webhook signatures are verified, so nobody else can write fake calls into the log.
The 90-second cut-off is a convention, not a law. Agree on the number with whoever pays, before the first call.
What it costs
These are Twilio list prices as of Aug 2026: a local number is $1.15 a month, inbound calls are $0.0085 a minute, the forwarded leg is $0.014 a minute, recording is $0.0025 a minute and storage is $0.0005 a minute per month. At this volume the Cloudflare Workers and D1 free tiers cover the rest. Twilio needs a prepaid balance, and buying the number goes through my approval gate like any other spend.
Setup, in outline
- Buy a local Twilio number in the site's area code.
- Install Wrangler, create a D1 database called
lead-callsand load the schema. - Set
FORWARD_TOto the contractor's number in E.164 format. Store the Twilio auth token and an export token as secrets. - Deploy the Worker, then point the number's "A call comes in" webhook at
/voiceusing HTTP POST. - Call the number from your own phone, then check that the CSV row shows talk seconds.
- Replace the placeholder across the site, rebuild and redeploy.
The whole setup took me about 30 minutes. To pause a buyer or switch to another one, change FORWARD_TO and deploy again.
Recording consent: read this before you go live
Some US states require every party to a call to consent to recording. Keep the recording notice at the start of the call, and check the rules for your state and your caller's state. If in doubt, turn recording off. Talk time still gets logged without it.
A note on pay-per-call
A billable-call log is also what pay-per-call networks work from. I looked at that path and dropped it on 11 Oct 2026, with no network applications sent. For me the tracker is just a way to count calls on sites without renters. Payouts vary a lot by trade. One industry benchmark from Aug 2026 put tree service at about $12 per call, so check your trade before planning around it.
Where this leaves me
- Rank-and-rent sites with a real number: 2
- Calls logged and billed: none recorded
- Renters: 0. Revenue: $0.
